Summer Class Structure: RCM Exam Preparation

RCM Practical Exam Tune-Up and Mock Exam: Piano, Violin, Cello

Instructor: Leading VAM faculty specializing in RCM exam preparation
Recommended for: Students following the RCM piano, violin, or cello curriculum
Class Times: August 2-5, Monday-Friday, 1:00-3:00pm (5 classes)
Per Lesson Fee: $37.50 per class
Class Description: Essential exam components will be reviewed in an intensive boot camp that will track progress and preparation culminating in a mock exam in preparation for the RCM August exam session. Areas of focus will include exam repertoire, etudes, technical requirements, sight reading and ear training.

RCM Theory: Basic Rudiments

Recommended for: Ages 8+, Suzuki 3+/RCM 4+ (must have completed Musicianship or equivalent on Music Rudiments Placement Test)
Class Times: May 31 - June 28, Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30pm & July 2 - August 3, Wednesdays and Fridays 1:00-2:30pm
Per Lesson Fee: $21.43 $20.00 per class
Class Description: Learn the basic elements of music notation including pitch, rhythm, scales, intervals, triads, transposition, analysis, and musical terms.

RCM Theory: Intermediate Rudiments

Recommended for: Ages 9+, Suzuki 4+/RCM 5+ (must have completed Basic Rudiments or equivalent on Music Rudiments Placement Test)
Class Times: May 31 - June 28, Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30pm & July 2 - August 3, Wednesdays and Fridays, 2:30-4:00pm
Per Lesson Fee: $21.43 $20.00 per class
Class Description: A continuation of Basic Rudiments, including all key signatures, triads, and extended terminology.

RCM Theory: Advanced Rudiments

Recommended for: Ages 9+, Suzuki 5+/RCM 6+ (must have completed Intermediate Rudiments or equivalent on Music Rudiments Placement Test)

Class Description: A continuation of Intermediate Rudiments, including cadences, transposition of some orchestral instruments, and melody writing.

RCM Theory: Basic Harmony

Recommended for: Ages 10+ (must have completed Advanced Rudiments or equivalent on Music Rudiments Placement Test)
Class Times: May 31 - June 28, Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30pm & July 2 - August 2, Tuesdays and Fridays, 1:00-3:00pm

Class Description: The basics of four-part chorale writing in the style of Bach, structural analysis, and melody writing.

RCM Theory: Intermediate Harmony

Class Times: May 31 - June 28, Tuesdays, 5:30-7:00pm & July 2 - August 2, Tuesdays & Fridays, 3:00-5:00pm

Class Description: A continuation of Basic Harmony including modulation, applied dominant and leading-note chords, and structural analysis of larger forms.

RCM Theory: Advanced Harmony

Class Description: Advanced chromatic harmony and modulation to remote keys. Contrapuntal two-part writing covered in Counterpoint is extended to create compositions in the Baroque style.

RCM Theory: Counterpoint

Class Times: May 31 - June 28, Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30pm & July 2 - August 2, Tuesdays and Fridays, 5:00-7:00pm

Class Description: Materials learned in Harmony are applied to two-part contrapuntal writing in the style of the Baroque period.  Introductory fugal analysis included.

RCM Theory: Analysis

Class Description: Building on the basic analytical skills developed in Rudiments and Harmony, students will explore art song, small and large instrumental forms, the fugal style of J. S. Bach, and important 20th-century compositional techniques.
