Koerner Piano Trio | Suk, Beethoven & Ravel

Class Description: The Koerner Piano Trio presents a varied program of music for an enthralling afternoon. Conceived as a result of chamber music evenings with friends, Suk’s Piano Trio No. 1 opens the concert with powerful, accented chords boldly stated by all three instruments. Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op. 70, No. 1 follows, a piece known by the name “Ghost” because of the dark melodies and tense atmosphere in the middle movement. To close is Ravel’s Piano Trio in A minor – a masterfully written piece that showcases a balance between the violin, cello and piano, a real treat to listen to.

KPT | Haydn, Shostakovich, & Brahms

Class Description: The Koerner Piano Trio presents three works sure to capture your attention from the very start. The opening chord of Haydn’s Piano Trio No. 45 in Eb Major will draw you in and keep you delighted by the simple, tuneful melodies and soul-searching modulations. Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, written upon the loss of his closest friend, takes you on a journey that juxtaposes intense emotions, as if the trio is mourning and remembering together. Although revised and finalized in his fifties, Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major retains the masterful scoring to highlight and heighten the passions his younger self felt when composing this work.

Koerner Piano Trio: The Piano Trios of Shostakovich

Class Description:

Written more than two decades apart, the first demonstrates the great acuity of a young student and the second paints a powerfully heart-rending landscape borne in the midst of the Second World War.

Koerner Piano Trio: Wistful Reflections

Class Description: From buoyant liveliness to a yearning strewn with hope, Koerner Piano Trio turns to introspection this winter through evoking a full range of emotional expression.  The playfulness of Haydn's "Gypsy" trio, culminating in the vivacious folk-inspired finale that earned its namesake, is met with the gripping melodies of Jean Coulthard's plaintive Lyric Trio. Concluding the concert is Dvorak's "Dumky" trio which, inspired by solemn folk ballads, sheds hopeful light into an atmosphere sodden with melancholy.
