2. Is there an age limit?
No. We believe that artists of all ages continue to grow and change, especially in a supportive environment.
3. what will be required for me?
Singers and pianists must have a firm understanding of their technique and should be able to access it most of the time
A willingness to participate in the class as a performer and as an active listener
Research of your repertoire: translations, orchestral scores, a working understanding of composer’s markings etc
4. what does a session look like?
There are 32 classes over the course of the year. We will meet on Mondays from 6:30-9:30. We do not meet on holiday Mondays
At least 3 people will sing/work/perform each week. The schedule will be made ahead of time
Sessions will have themes based on your repertoire. E.g. Baroque ornamentation, Italian recitative, efficiency in practicing, skills for the audition vs. the performance
5. Can i use the practice rooms at vam?
Yes! As a registered VAM student, you have access to the practice rooms subject to availability (first come, first served). However, we strongly suggest that you practice between 9am and 3:30pm as space is at a premium in the after-school hours.
6. What to expect from the recording sessions?
There will be THREE recording sessions throughout the year. Everyone will get an opportunity to do a video recording in VAM’s Koerner Recital Hall in the fall, winter and spring.
Sessions will be held on the following dates:
November 20, 21
February 26, 27
June 6, 7
You will have between 60 and 70 minutes of recording time in each session.
You will share the session with colleagues so that your allotted recording time is spread out over a 4-hour period. You’ll get lots of breaks!
7. Who will we work with?
The best artistic practice starts by building relationships with your colleagues. You will work with your fellow pianists and singers in the cohort.
You will work together for all the classes and recording session
Classes are guided by Robyn and Tina through a variety of repertoire and topics relevant to auditions and performances
8. will there be other industry professionals involved?
Yes! There will be up to 5 external guest artists joining us throughout the year to workshop specific topics pertaining to their expertise
Guests include professionals in vocal health and speech pathology, acting and movement, stage directors, and conductors working in both opera and musical theatre
