RCM Exam Prep: Practical, Theory, History

Recommended for:  students following the RCM Curriculum

RCM Theory exams provide an excellent foundation necessary for students to fully appreciate and understand their music; building confidence and making it easier for them to progress in their instrumental training.  RCM Theory exams are required co-requisites in order to successfully obtain RCM Practical certificates

VAM shares a close institutional relationship with the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) that includes its official designation as Vancouver West exam centre.

AP Music Theory and Ear Training

Class Description: AP Music Theory is an advanced course for high school students focused on the fundamentals of music notation, harmony, melody, rhythm, and form. Students will develop skills in sight-singing, dictation, composition, and analysis. The course prepares students for the AP Music Theory exam, potentially earning advanced credit or placement in many Canadian and American post-secondary programs. Students must register separately for the AP Exam. 

RCM Harmony 10 (online)

Recommended for: Students wishing to complete RCM examinations
Class Time: Sundays 11:30am-12:30pm, Wednesdays 5:45-6:45pm, July 7th - December 11th

Class Description:

RCM Harmony 10 (online, July to December)

Class Description:  This course is for students who have completed the Harmony 9 exam.  Our 28-session course will cover topics such as:  SATB harmonization, two-part contrapuntal writing, form analysis, and melody writing, with an intermediate exploration into simple modulation.  There will be at least three (3) supervised online practice exams (Sunday mornings).  Textbooks are optional; all students will receive a simplified notes package which covers all the course topics.

An evaluation test must be written before admittance into this course.  The RCM Harmony 10 exam is mandatory and must be completed as an in-person exam in December.


Beginner Theory

Class Description: For students with little to no theory experience in order to prepare to enroll RCM Grade 5 theory in the future. This class will take place in the Piano Lab where every student will have their own Clavinova. No prior piano experience is required.

Class Description:

RCM Harmony 9 (online, July to December)

Class Description: Jumpstart your knowledge in music theory! Students will work towards their RCM theory requirements with weekly classes and two mock exams, led by RCM's Vancouver West Exam Centre Representative. This year-long course will culminate in the RCM Level 6 written exam in May. No previous theory experience is required.

Accelerated RCM Theory 7/8

Recommended for: Ages 10-13 who have completed the RCM Theory 6 written exam or equivalent

Class Description: In this continuation of music theory studies, students will attend weekly classes and two mock exams let by RCM's Vancouver West Exam Centre Representative. This year-long course will culminate in the RCM Level 8 written exam in May.

Adult Theory and Ear Training II

Recommended for: Adults who have completed Adult Theory & Ear Training, or those with basic knowledge

Class Description: Designed for adults with continued interested in developing a strong foundation of musicianship, Adult Theory & Ear Training further introducing students to the fundamental skills of music theory, ear training, and appreciation.  This class runs for 13 weeks. There is a September and January intake for this class.

Beginner Theory Level 1

Recommended for: Ages 5-6
Class Description: In this introductory course, students will build a foundation for music theory, literacy, and understanding by exploring everything in the world of music from composers around the globe to the fine detail of the notes, rhythms and instruments that make up our musical landscape.

Beginner Theory Level 2

Recommended for: Ages 6-8
Class Description: The perfect companion to practical music studies, Beginner Theory Level 2 introduces students to elements of notation, rhythm, scales, and intervals in small class sizes with a maximum of four. This is a semi-private course that defaults to online delivery.
