Amanda Lawrence is a South African musicologist and flutist based in Vancouver, Canada as of 2021. A passionate performer and academic who holds a BMus (Stellenbosch University, 2019) and MMus (University of British Columbia, 2022) in Flute Performance, Amanda is currently completing her graduate studies in Musicology at UBC (2024). Her research interest lies in the relationships between music and identity – specifically how imposed gender structures and race ideologies influence composers (and their works), performers, and music institutions. She most recently explored these interests as a research fellow at the State University of New York’s Institute for Composer Diversity. Though much of her focus is on scholarship, Amanda still enjoys performing. Her passion for collaborative playing and new music has allowed her the privilege of performing internationally in countries such as Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. She is a big advocate for bridging the divide between scholarship and performance through the academic lens of performance studies.
