Flute Fest

Class Description: VAM's inaugural Flute Fest features a full day of activities including masterclasses, performances, and a presentation by Burkart Flutes & Piccolos. Join Paul Hung (Flute Fest Artistic Director and VAM faculty), Catherine Ransom Karoly (Associate principal flute of Los Angeles Philharmonic/ Flute professor of USC), and Ethan Lin (Burkart Representative) for this event on March 10, 2024.  

Fest Schedule

11 am - All about your body with Diane / Exercises for all flutists Learn about your body and how it relates to tone production and technical flexibility. Acquire helpful exercises to regain muscular balance while playing flute!

12 pm - Sight reading party with Moonlight Flute Quartet Led by the award winning Moonlight Flute Quartet, have a blast playing exciting flute ensemble repertoire. Bring your instruments!

12:50 pm - Burkart Flute presentation/ Flute Trial Try some impeccably crafted, handmade flutes and piccolos by the inimitable Lillian Burkart.

2 pm - Flute Masterclass with Ethan Lin Observe professional flutist/ Burkart Representative, Ethan Lin, lead a class featuring incredible young talents.

3 pm - Flute Masterclass with Catherine Ransom Karoly Associate Principal Flute of Los Angeles Philharmonic and teacher at the University of Southern California, our featured guest artist, Catherine Ransom Karoly, leads a masterclass featuring some of the most challenging flute concerti performed by VAM's Finest.

5 pm - Catherine Ransom Karoly Flute Recital A concert you will not want to miss!

Class Description: Free admission: VAM's Spring Carnival & Open House is the perfect opportunity for both prospective and existing students to celebrate the VAM community.  Open-door classes allow the exploration of the various programs VAM has to offer and student concerts throughout the day showcase the wide variety of achievements over the past academic year. When you are not learning, take some time to enjoy face painting, balloons, popcorn, food, and more!

Piano Masterclass with Joyce Yang

Class Description: koerner Recital Hall Co-presented with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Pianist Joyce Yang captivates audiences across the globe with her virtuosity, lyricism, and magnetic stage presence. Ms. Yang came to international attention in 2005 when she won the silver medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Since this debut, she has blossomed into an astonishing artist and continues to appear with orchestras around the world.
