Welcome to one of British Columbia’s most exciting competitions that occurs once every two years and provides a unique opportunity for aspiring musicians to perform as soloist with the VAM Symphony Orchestra on the stage of the historic Orpheum Theatre. The Bjorn & Lori Hareid Provincial Concerto Competition is categorized into instrument and age groups and is open to any music student residing in British Columbia.*

*Featured soloists of VAM Symphony Orchestra’s 2019/20 season are ineligible to apply.

Winner, Category A: Bjorn & Lori Hareid Scholarship Award, $2,000
Winner, Category B: Loyal Protestant Association Scholarship Award, $1,500
Winner, Category C: Michael & Mary Shields Scholarship Award, $1,000

Instrument & Age Categories
Category A, 24 years and under*: piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, voice, percussion
Category B, 18 years and under *: piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, voice, percussion
Category C, 12 years and under*: piano, strings, woodwinds

Repertoire
Any movement or work for solo instrument or voice and orchestra, maximum 15 minutes.

Adjudication
An adjudication committee will select multiple winners to appear as soloist with the VAM Symphony Orchestra. Written commentary will be supplied for each entrant.

Application Fee
$75; $50 for VAM students.
